Mahinog is said to have a large banana plantation during the early days. Such that its name was derived from the Visayan term of ripe “hinog.” Mahinog literally translates to "to ripen."

The fame Mantigue Island is located in Mahinog. The municipality also serves as the main gateway of Camiguin because of the Benoni Wharf. If you came from Mindanao (through Balingoan Wharf), Mahinog welcomes you to Camiguin.
